Adolescent Medicine

Adolescent medicine is an area of healthcare that specializes in common medical issues that occur during puberty. Adolescent medicine goes beyond a regular check-up or prescription and addresses social pressures that accompany preteen and teenage years. We deal with acne, menstruation, abnormal or accelerated growth, reproductive health, mood changes, and eating disorders. We also educate teens and their parents on how to handle pressure to do drugs, drink, or smoke and explain the effects these activities have on the body. Our team works to monitor and balance hormonal changes in teens. In adolescent medicine, we often address emotional distress, physical conditions, and we even treat depression, if necessary.

Adult Medicine

At Pelican Family Medicine, our doctors and staff are dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of common adult medical problems. Our providers specialize in primary care, general health assessments and consultation for complex medical problems. There is an emphasis on caring for the whole patient.

Dermatologic Conditions

Pelican Family Medicine can treat a variety of dermatologic conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, acne, scars, EB, and dry skin. We may prescribe topical treatments, oral medication, diet changes, or changing shampoos, soaps, or lotions to help alleviate these conditions.

Diabetic Care

Our doctors can treat diabetes patients of any age. Type 1 diabetes is not preventable and accounts for 5%-10% of people with diabetes. People with type 1 diabetes usually begin to show symptoms in childhood. The body's immune system destroys the cells that produce insulin, limiting or eliminating insulin in the body. Cells cannot absorb sugar without insulin, which is necessary to produce energy.

In type 2 diabetes, the body is not able to use insulin correctly, and over time, the body makes less and less insulin. Type 2 diabetes is preventable through a healthy lifestyle, healthy weight, healthy eating, and regular exercise. This preventable form of diabetes accounts for 90%-95% of diabetic cases.

Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness and kidney failure and is a serious risk factor in heart disease, stroke, and foot or leg amputations.

Diet changes and medications can help control diabetes. Our staff will also go over the risks associated with diabetes such as pregnancy complications, and what the risks are if the disease goes unmanaged.

Geriatric Care

We strive to maximize a patient's function, balance quality of life issues with risks of tests and treatments, and keep patients in their home environments as much as possible. Our staff at Pelican Family Medicine provides compassionate care for the elderly. We pride ourselves on listening to our patients and being proactive in their medical care. In healthcare, serious symptoms can be mistaken for normal aging. We listen to our patients and strive to provide them with the best care. Even normal aging can be improved with diet, medication, or other small changes in lifestyle.

Health Care Screenings

Our clinic provides all types of health care screenings including PAP smears, mammograms, prostate cancer screenings, stress tests, lipid profiles (cholesterol test), lung cancer testing, colonoscopies, blood glucose testing, and blood pressure measurements. If you are wondering what screenings you should receive, ask our medical staff. Based on your age, current health, and genetics, we can suggest the recommended screenings.

Pediatric Care

We also treat common chronic conditions such as ADD, diabetes, allergies, asthma, and eczema. We offer sports physicals, administer vaccines, and offer primary treatment for injuries. We can also refer your child to a specialist, if there is a need.

Preventive Medicine

Why not prevent health problems before they occur? Preventative medicine keeps patients healthy. We learn about your health history through diagnostic tools and tests. We can restore balance to body systems including the immune system and digestive system. We can assist in detoxification and help you fight signs of aging. In preventative medicine, we aim to prevent diseases from occurring, avert complications of a disease, or even halt a disease. Patients also have the opportunity to participate in clinical research studies, another area of preventive medicine.
